The earthquake in Japan and the tsunami that followed made us again think about the end of the world. Is 21-12-2012 the D-day? When ploughing the subject of Dec 21 2012, many people believe that followers of 2012 are simply crackpots, doomsday fantasists, or half-baked jerks who are devoid of any common rationale. After all, look what happened to Y2K – nothing. So what should we be afraid of and what should we be looking out for as Dec 21 2012 draws ever nearer? Let us dwell into a few details of why it may be or why it cannot be an apocalypse.

The Nature’s wrath on the earthly beings is being terrifyingly increasing from the last few decades. The menace is not only from the mother earth but even the divine Sun and the lacteal pathway – Milky Way are perils. The nature alone cannot be blamed. Humans play a vital role in converting this haven to an inferno. Earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, cyclones, avalanches, blizzards, famines, winter storms, heat waves and floods straddle the entire human history. The frequency of which has become a bit worrying at the present time. Considering only major natural disasters in the last decade, the death toll has been more than 1.4 million.

The far-famed Mayan Calendar ends in 2012. Running out of rock to continue the calendar can be comfortably excluded from the options of why the calendar ended at 2012. NASA endorsed the precision of Mayan’s ways of calculating days and other cosmic events. Doesn’t this add fuel to the speculation? Were Mayans clairvoyant about their next generations misdeeds or nature’s mishaps? Well, only Mayans know the answer.

Arctic Circle is near the North Pole and Antarctica is near the South Pole. We have been taught this since our school days. In fact, if there were schools, the same thing would have been taught from last 7lakh years. You got the point. Yes! The poles weren’t in the same position as they are now. North Pole was South Pole and South Pole was North Pole before that. Research shows that earth’s magnetic poles have reversed 14times till now and the process has started again now. NASA says that pole shifts threatens to cause weather chaos which may be unendurable degree.

Even light cannot escape a black hole. The details beyond this statement are still to be testified. However, on the winter solstice of 2012, the noonday Sun exactly conjuncts the crossing point of the Sun’s ecliptic with the galactic plane. Whilst also crossing at the exact centre of our Galaxy. The scientific community agree that at the centre of every galaxy lies a black hole. Will our Sun get swallowed up by a black hole as it crosses the centre of our Galaxy in 2012? Only time will tell!

Man’s quest to find the divinity started from the day he began to think. Science and Religion have always had fights regarding superiority. Scientists at CERN have finally decided to establish a relation between science and religion. In an unending pursuit for the God particle, construction of Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has started and is expected to function at full throttle by the end of 2012. (Coincidence?) Scientists say that LHC produces black holes which collapse within a fraction of second. But the scary fact is that LHC becomes a black hole manufacturing factory producing implodes at a rate of 1 black hole per second. Pessimists argue saying that, what if the black holes don’t collapse?

There are many catastrophic events that are overdue. Super Volcano explosion is just an example. Nuclear or biological holocaust, nano technology weapons, global warming, fuel shortage, economic collapse, massive crop failure, asteroid impact and gamma rays are few other apples of the same basket. Technology advancements help man to lead a comfortable life was the saying of early times. The movies like i-robot and terminator have already shown what is possible.

For all the theists out there, Interpretations of the Christian Bible reveal that the date for Armageddon, the final battle between Good and Evil, has been set down for 2012. The ‘I Ching’, also known as the Chinese book of Changes, says the same thing, as do various sections of the Hindu teachings.

Last but might not be the least… Population growth and consumption of resources on the planet have increased exponentially over time. If the exponential growth continues at this rate, then 2012 will take the form of anarchy on a scale we can only dream of in our worst nightmares.

Doesn’t matter what one says, Pessimists curse and Optimists believe.  It’s not all doom and gloom. Humans are resilient creatures and we will conquer whatever comes our way, be it foreign intergalactic invasion or a domestic lawless society. In the meantime, best start living it up. Time is short.

Signing off with optimism!
